Meet the new Senior A Coordinator

Like most girls growing up in Australia, Abby started playing netball as a young girl in school. She continued to play netball her whole life, so after moving to Canada in 2013 she was quick to seek out Netball Alberta. Over the years, Abby has played on multiple teams and was recently made the Team Manager of her team in the Senior A league. When the role for Senior A Coordinator opened up, Abby happily accepted the role as it was a great way to give back to Netball Alberta who is grateful for her commitment and enthusiasm!

Welcome to our new Netball Alberta School Clinicians

Lizzy Orridge

I started playing netball at 8 years old and it quickly became my passion, so from then on I was playing netball whenever I could! Being keen to pass on my passion, I began coaching younger children when I was 15 years old and haven't stopped since. I started playing for local and regional teams as an adult and soon discovered that it was not only my passion and a great way to keep fit but also a great way to meet new people. I have now been coaching for 7 years and haven't missed playing a season yet.

My aim for Netball Alberta is to design fun, fast-paced coaching sessions that leave the children wanting more! Having worked with young people in a variety of different settings, I know that if they are not enjoying their lesson, they are not going to learn - so it's my job to make sure they do. Oh- and I need no excuse to put a pinny on and get stuck in myself!

Jenny Hawker

Jenny Hawker has recently moved to Calgary from the UK where she was a level 2 coach for ladies and juniors in both clubs and schools around the UK. Jenny has been coaching and umpiring Netball for over 2 years as well as playing for 20 years.

Jenny has had the experience of coaching juniors for England Netball camps along side some England international players.  With her coaching and playing experience, she is thoroughly looking forward to joining the Netball Alberta Coaching team!

Western Championship 2017

Well done and thank you to all of the players attending the 2017 Western Championship in British Columbia, the weekend was full of nail biting, end to end game play and sportsmanship.

Special congratulations to Alberta's U16 squad who were successful in their campaign for the Gold medal, taking it down to the wire in the final game and beating BC 34-32, and winning the series 2 games to 1. Alberta's young U18 squad had a tougher time up against a mature BC U18 squad and came home with the Silver medal.

The facilities were fabulous, and all players attending represented their province with pride. It was great to see the development of all the players, and I know they appreciated the court side support received from family and friends.

I would like to say thank you to Michelle Le for stepping in as Assistant Coach, Evelyn Francis as Team Manager, Dianne Le  for providing your umpiring expertise and our physiotherapist, Rachel Tran, for keeping the girls as fit and healthy as possible.

We also want to thank RME for sponsoring the squads, and Netball Alberta and its members who make it possible to attend such competitions. Looking forward to hosting in 2018 and hopefully next year doing the double gold!

Sam Elsom
Head Coach

It was another fun and exciting tournament for the Seniors on November 24 & 25, 2017 at Southland Leisure Centre.

Thank you to the umpires, scorekeepers, league coordinators and Lavinia McElwee, our Tournament Director, for all your time and hard work. We would not have these tournaments without you!

Thank you for coming, Edmonton and Drumheller players. It is always great to have you here.

Junior A 2017 Fall Tournament

The Junior A Fall Tournament took place on November 26 at Southland Leisure Centre from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. We had a great turnout for all of the teams and the tournament saw some intense competition. I was very impressed with the commitment that the players showed to playing the games to their fullest abilities and with the improvement in their skills since the beginning of the season.

The Standings were:

1st place - Lightning

2nd place - Steel

3rd place - Wasps

4th place - Jaquars

The Jaguars started strong in the highest scoring game on the day with a 9 – 9  draw with the eventual winners, the Lightning. All of the games were relatively close but in the end the Lightning defeated the Steel in the gold medal game and the Wasps came away with the bronze after a close game with the Jaguars.
