Saturday July 12th, 2014, Netball Alberta hosted two team selections from Merchant Taylors’ Girl’s School. Calgary was a stop on their Canadian Tour taking place from July 9th to July 26th, which included visits to Banff, Kelowna, Whistler, Vancouver, and Victoria. We embodied true Stampede hospitality by offering Pancakes and refreshments in the Wood Creek meeting room of Southland Leisure Centre following two very competitive matches.
Teams arrived at Southland at 9:00am for warm-up in preparation for 2 full-length regulation games. The first game consisted of Merchant Taylors’ second team selection against Netball Alberta’s team dominated by Junior A and Senior B players. After a rather feisty hour of play, Netball Alberta won with a final score of 33 – 11. The more senior team from Merchant Taylor played a similar style to our U18 selection during the second game, but our speed through the mid-court, attacking maneuver timing, and tight man-to-man defense in the circle resulted in a second extremely satisfying win of 33-12.
Members of Netball Alberta’s Junior A division, Cygnets & Goslings, and Senior A players worked extremely well together in the two matches played against the Merchant Taylor girls. It was exciting to see the promise and skill-development of our junior players in combination with the mentorship and fast play of our senior players. The level of play was encouraging to witness against international competition, giving our girls well-deserved confidence leading up to the Disney International Youth Netball Tournament October 28th in Orlando.
It was an absolute pleasure to host the girls from this UK school and we hope to meet them again for a rematch during a future visit across the pond.
Thanks to the following players and volunteers for giving their time and energy to making these teams feel welcome and showing them Netball Alberta’s style of play.
