Caribbean Heritage Sports Presents Island vs Island Sports Competition

September 6th, 2014

On Saturday September 6th, 2014 Netball Alberta participated in the first Caribbean Heritage Sports Competition (CHSC) held at the Calgary Rotary Challenger Park. Calgary community associations entered teams’ representative of Caribbean nations to compete in Olympic style round robins in cricket, basketball, soccer, dominoes, track and field, and netball.

All ages were welcome to participate with the vision of creating a positive sporting event which participants and spectators alike can come together in unity to celebrate sports and heritage. Nations participating in the festivities included Trinadad and Tobago, Barbados, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Haiti, and Grenada. Netball Alberta entered a team of eight Senior A and B division players from our Calgary league to represent Guyana in the games.

We were greeted by an abundance of food and music surrounding tents displaying the competing nations’ flags. Netball Alberta’s players marched under Guyana’s flag during the opening ceremonies Parade of Islands and proudly won them the Netball mini-tournament.

Our team played two games throughout the day against Antigua and Barbuda’s representative team and Jamaica’s team and achieved wins on both counts. It was great to witness the expertise in netball players within Calgary as well as the blossoming talent in those who played netball for the very first time that day.

Thank you to all the volunteers who participated and to the Netball manager Faye Brereton for organizing Netball’s incorporation. We would like to give special thanks to those representatives of Guyana from the Guyana Canada Cultural Association who were such kind hosts and provided our athletes with excellent lunches and refreshments throughout the day.
