2016 Netball Alberta Inter-School Tournament

May 3rd, 2016

Netball Alberta hosted the second annual Inter-School Tournament on Saturday April 23rd, 2016, occupying the entire Sports Hall at Southland Leisure Centre.

Thirteen teams faced off during a total of twenty-one games among the three divisions, demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship and netball skill acquired through Netball Alberta school clinics and the tutelage of their committed teachers. This year we were able to include an additional division for junior high students in grades 7, 8, and 9 with the overwhelming participation from Ecole Madeleine d’Houet and our very own Netball Alberta player volunteers of that age group.  This was an exciting addition that we hope will only expand in the coming years.

A special thank you goes out to those teachers involved in organizing their school teams’ participation, for attending the tournament themselves in a coaching capacity. Netball Alberta’s wonderful veteran and first-time coaches alike imparted their wisdom on these new players, umpired games, and facilitated team bonding activities during the afternoon of action with elegance in the midst of a tremendous number of spectators and players filling every nook and cranny of the gym and corridors. We were so overwhelmed to see an amazing number of parent supporters present throughout the day to watch their children excel in a new sport! It was fantastic to see each player improve throughout the day and give the competition their all!

A very big thank you goes out to Dianne Le and Emma Wilton for their tireless hours of umpiring and to Vicki Lendrum who eagerly stepped in to man the registration and score keeping tables, arriving expecting only to watch her daughter play.

As for the results of the tournament, we distributed medals to the teams placing first, second, and third in each division, with consolation Netball Alberta water bottles going to the fourth and fifth place teams.

The results were as follows:

Division 1 (Grade 7-9):

1st Place – Ecole Madeleine d’Houet - B

2nd Place – Netball Alberta

3rd Place – Ecole Madeleine d’Houet - C

4th Place – Ecole Madeleine d’Houet -A

The support from parents, teachers, coaches, and players has been outstanding and we hope to support these players in their future netball endeavors including participation in league or further school activities. We look forward to watching their talent grow and to another successful Inter-School Tournament in 2017.
